Somatic Therapy
Somatic therapy is a body-centered approach to healing that explores the deep connection between mind, body, and spirit. From birth, we communicate and connect through sound, movement, touch, and eye contact—experiences that shape who we are. Early memories, including those of trauma, are stored in the body at a cellular level and can influence our physical and emotional well-being for years to come.
The idea that the body stores trauma isn’t new. Wilhelm Reich, a student of Sigmund Freud, was among the first to explore this connection, observing how unresolved experiences can manifest physically as inflammation, muscle tension, chronic pain, heart disease, and sleep issues. His work bridged the emotional, physical, and spiritual realms—laying the groundwork for what we now call somatic psychology.
How Somatic Psychotherapy Works:
Somatic psychotherapy uses integrative, trauma-informed methods to help you develop self-awareness, move beyond past experiences, and regulate your nervous system. Practices like felt sense, pendulation, titration, and resourcing gently guide you back into balance—helping you feel more grounded, centered, and connected to yourself. Somatic therapy is of body, mind, and spirit - which includes the whole body in healing.
The Body’s Stress Response:
When we experience trauma, our bodies may respond with fight, flight, freeze, or fawn. While these are natural protective mechanisms, remaining in a heightened state for too long can dysregulate the nervous system—raising cortisol levels, creating chronic muscle tension, and increasing the risk of illness. Over time, this imbalance can contribute to conditions such as post-traumatic stress disorder, heart disease, autoimmune disorders, and other health challenges.
Benefits of Somatic Therapy:
Somatic therapy helps you access and release unconscious patterns and stored tension, creating space for healing at both the cellular and emotional level. Through embodiment practices, you can:
Regulate your emotions and nervous system
Increase resilience and inner resources
Reduce symptoms of anxiety and depression
Improve your overall sense of well-being
Whether you are navigating the effects of trauma, struggling with anxiety, or simply seeking a deeper connection with yourself, somatic therapy offers a path toward balance, resilience, and lasting change. I look forward to hearing from you and supporting you along this journey.
